The original manuscript on six quarto pages, written and signed by Leeuwenhoek, is preserved at the Royal Society (MS. 1895. Early Lettters L1.66).On the outside, Leeuwenhoek wrote, "Hoog geleerde Seer Ver / maerde Heer / d'Heer Robert Hooke - / Secretary of te Royall / Society ad Gresham Colleg: / London". Part of his red wax seal remains.
