Johannes Hudde

Hudde was a mathematician, educated at the university in Leiden. In 1656, he wrote Specilla circularia, about telescopes. Between 1672 and 1703, Hudde was the mayor of Amsterdam nineteen times, as often as the rules allowed.

Hudde developed a single lens microscope several years before Leeuwenhoek did. Although Leeuwenhoek never mentioned Hudde, he may well have been influenced by Hudde's lenses and technique for making them.
