Francis Aston wrote Letter L-148 to Leeuwenhoek to thank him for his letter with observations of the lens of the eye, which was read to the Royal Society and was well-received by them

Date:
June 7, 1684

This letter is known only by reference in another letter.

In this letter, Francis Aston writes to L. to thank him for his letter with observations of the lens of the eye, which was read to the Royal Society and was well-received by them.

Aston’s previous letter to Leeuwenhoek is Letter L-146 of 7 March 1684. Leeuwenhoek replied to it with Letter L-147 of 14 April 1684, the last letter that he addressed to Aston.

Instead, Leeuwenhoek addressed his next letter, Letter L-150 of 25 July 1684 to the members of the Royal Society. Even though Leeuwenhoek did not address his letters to Aston, as he had done previously, Aston continued to reply to each letter during the rest of his term as secretary. His next letter to Leeuwenhoek was Letter L-151, written between August and mid-October 1684, in which he informed Leeuwenhoek that his most recent letter had not been read yet because the Royal Society was not in session. Aston wrote four more letters to L. before his term as secretary ended in December 1685.

Letter L-150 of 25 July 1684 to the Royal Society

The noble gentleman Mr. Francis Aston, her most noble secretary writes to me on the 28th May Old Style, that my latest observations concerning the crystalline humour were translated and read at a meeting of the Royal Society and that they were so well received that Mr. Aston not only thanked me most heartily on behalf of the Royal Society, but also intimated that the Society was much obliged for all the observations I had regularly sent until now. This I have not only heard with great pleasure, but feel myself on account of so much honour and friendliness under so great an obligation that I shall exert my poor powers to the utmost and will endeavour to make myself more capable so as always to be able to acknowledge the very great honour shown me by the honourable members of the Royal Society.
