Ik zou dan eens trachten voor U de wapens te ontcijferen, die onze zoo heel eenvoudige en zoo heel nederige voorvaderen, zelfs op hunne borden lieten inbaken; ik zou geneigd wezen U een en ander te vertellen van die Maria van Leeuwenhoek, de dochter van den grooten Delftschen natuuronderzoeker, van wie men zegt dat zij een paar ter tentoonstelling aanwezige borden sierde met het schilderwerk harere talentvolle hand.

I would then try to decipher for you the coats of arms that our so very simple and so very humble ancestors made, even on their plates. I would be tempted to tell you a few things about that Maria van Leeuwenhoek, the daughter of the great Delft naturalist, who is said to adorn a few plates present at the exhibition with her painter's talented hand.

This speculation is hedged with "men zegt dat", people say that. Maria is not listed in the exhibition's catalogue. Nor was she a guild member. At her death, she owned hundreds of pieces of earthenware, some of which may well have found its way into this exhibition.
