Newton was president of the Royal Society from 1703 until his death in 1727.

Newton and astronomer Edmond Halley had little use for microscopes. They were long-time opponents of Robert Hooke, who was Leeuwenhoek's chief proponent at the Society. During the two periods that he was editor of Philosophical Transactions, Halley did not publish Leeuwenhoek.
