The editors of early volumes of Alle de Brieven / Collected Letters appended several scholarly studies to the letters. At the end of volume 4, editor A. Schierbeek included this article, which gave some context and then discussed Leeuwenhoek's work on the eye, about which he had written two long letters, both in volume 4:
