Leeuwenhoek wrote this letter as cover letter for Letter L-228. States that he sends his observations of the reproduction of a flea, in printed form, and hopes that this will be acceptable.

He requested that packages to him be sent via

Mr. Philip van Leeuwen at Rotterdam, who is my sister's son and who, with every convoy that goes to London or comes back from there, always ships goods to London or receives them.

The convoys were necessary to protect shipments against pirates.
