This view of Delft after the biggest disaster that happened to the city during Leeuwenhoek's lifetime, the gunpowder explosion in October 1654. Van der Poel lost a daughter in the explosion and ensuring fire. He spent the rest of his life repeatedly painting variations on this scene.
