Croone was a physician and Founder Fellow of the Royal Society in 1663.
In November 1677, Croone was one of the nine witnesses to the replication of Leeuwenhoek's observations, as noted in Birch's History.
In the spring of 1680, Croone nominated Leeuwenhoek for election as Fellow.
