Compensated by city for expenses building a loading dock in front of his house

In front of Leeuwenhoek's house was a sidewalk along the Hippolytusbuurt canal. On it, Leeuwenhoek constructed a "platinge" as a loading dock. The city reimbursed him for his expenses, and he had to maintain it.

Den 14 September 1660 aan Antony Leeuwevelt camerbewaerder van Schepenen, ses ende dertich gld. negentien st. volgens declaratie, van calck en steen ende arbeijtsloon aen de platinge voor sijne huijsinge genaemt de Rode Zee in Hippolitusuurt, die hij nevens de vleugel van de brugge gemaeckt heeft. On September 14, 1660, to Antony Leeuwevelt [sic] camerbewaarder for the magistrates, thirty-six gulden, nineteen stuivers, according to his declaration, of lime and stone and work compensation for the plate for his house named the Rode Zee on the Hippolytusbuurt, that he has made next to the wing of the bridge. Note that the forenamed Leeuwevelt has contracted in the future to maintain the forementioned plate at all times. See: Memorandum book.

In fact, the Rode Zee was the house next door to Leeuwenhoek's Gouden Hoofd. It was occupied by the widow of long-time mayor Joost Corneliszn. Lodesteijn, who had died the previous April.
