Annuities

Maria's seven life annuities (lijfrenten; right sidebar; click to enlarge) were bought while her father was still alive for a total of 9,132 guldens. They paid either 9% or 10% annual interest, sometimes twice per year, for a total of 832 guilders per year. Overall, Antony and Maria received at least 17,976 guilders more than they paid for them, a profit of almost 200%.

Because these were life annuities, they were valid for the life of the person named (not necessarily the purchaser) and were not transferable.

Maria's two annuities (losrenten; right sidebar; click to enlarge) were purchased by other people before her birth. At some point, either she or her father purchased them, perhaps from the original investor or that person's family, perhaps from a third party who had already puchased them from the original investor. We do not know how much the Leeuwenhoeks paid for these annuities, with a face value of 2,300 guilders, or when they purchased them, so we do not know how much Maria profited from the annual (or semi-annual) payments, which brought in 127 guilders per year.
